Legal Seminar and Social Reintegration: Collaboration Between Second Chance Foundation and Japan Indonesia Lawyers Association at Tangerang Youth Correctional Facility

On September 30, 2024, the Second Chance Foundation, in collaboration with the Japan Indonesia Lawyers Association (JILA), organized the "Legal Seminar and Social Reintegration" at Class IIA Tangerang Youth Prison. This event represents a concrete step to support the development and social reintegration of inmates, particularly for law students continuing their education at the Kampus Kehidupan of Tangerang Youth Correctional Facility. The seminar was attended by 35 participants who actively engaged in discussions and knowledge exchange.

JILA, an association established in 2012, aims to strengthen relationships among legal researchers, practitioners, and individuals interested in litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution in Indonesia and Japan. This activity serves as a strategic platform to share legal knowledge and introduce inmates to comparative legal systems of both countries.

The seminar commenced with a ceremonial session led by Ms. Evy Amir Syamsudin, founder of the Second Chance Foundation, and Mr. Teruo Saito, President of JILA. In her speech, Ms. Evy emphasized the importance of legal education and training for inmates as part of their reintegration efforts into society. Mr. Teruo Saito expressed appreciation for this collaboration and hoped that the event would benefit all participants. Following this, a laptop sponsored by LPK Mugen Indonesia and several books from JILA were presented for educational needs at the Youth Correctional Facility. Additionally, plaques were awarded by Second Chance Foundation to partners who actively participated in this initiative. The ceremonial session was concluded by Mr. Wahyu Hendrajati Setyo Nugroho, Head of Class IIA Tangerang Youth Prison, who then opened the seminar session.

The keynote speaker for the seminar was Mr. Nakamura Takami, a JILA member and former prosecutor in Japan, who is now an attorney and manager of a Japanese language school in Bali. Mr. Nakamura delivered a presentation on the Japanese legal system, introducing participants to various legal aspects of his country and providing insights into the importance of the reintegration process. His presentation covered the significance of understanding law and legal culture within society, as well as how inmates can prepare to reintegrate into the community without repeating past mistakes.

Participants displayed great enthusiasm, evidenced by the numerous questions raised during the discussion session. All participants, being law students, seized this opportunity to deepen their understanding of international legal comparisons and the importance of social reintegration within the legal context.

Through this event, it is hoped that inmates at the Kampus Kehidupan of Tangerang Youth Correctional Facility will enhance their understanding of the legal systems in both Indonesia and Japan, gaining broader insights into the reintegration process. With this knowledge, they are expected to reintegrate into society as better individuals, thereby avoiding the repetition of previous mistakes.

This event also reflects the commitment of the Second Chance Foundation and JILA to continue supporting the education and rehabilitation of inmates as part of a broader social reintegration program, helping them contribute positively to society in the future.
